How racist is Japan?

This is the result of the survey for my class project.

I asked those who have/had lived in or traveled to Japan how they are/were treated.

Over 170 people answered my survey. Thank you for your cooperation!

I found out  85% of people have a positive experience because of their race,

70% of people have a negative experience because of their race,

and that White Privilege apparently exists in Japan.

However, white people are discriminated against as well. That is because they are viewed as "outsiders'

Japanese people associate discrimination with other Asian races such as; Burakumin, Ainu, Ryukyu, Korean, Chinese in Japan.

This video mentions discrimination in Japan, which is not tought about.

Many Japanese people are not familiar with this topic, but my international friends who study about Japanese culture are aware of the discrimination found in Japan.

This is because they learn about Japanese culture from different perspectives.

Japan like anyother nation does not teach about their wrong-doings against other nations.

As I mentioned before, many Japanese do not know about Unit 731.

This discrimination was based on ethnicity.

However, in the future, new problems revolving around race will occur as more people from foreign countries will visit Japan.

Hafu | the mixed-race experience in Japan

The documentary above shows the problems that mixed-Japanese people have.

Many answers to the survey said, "I hope Japanese society will become more tolerant of

mixed-Japanese","My child is mixed-Japanese, but I'm really worried about their future in

Japan."

These issues are crucially related to race.

However, Japanese people are still ignorant about race.

Japanese people do not think about race in their daily life.

Honestly, I myself did not think about race or even the fact that I was considered an Asian.

We as Japanese do not know about the stereotypes of Japan, moreover, we do not know about how or what others think about Japan.

Many answers to the survey said, "Japanese people don't know about foreign cultures."

I saw another answers that said ''Some people pulled on my hair out of curiosity" or "Some people asked me why your skin is so dark?"

It is scary of being ignorant.

You can hurt others by using one subtle word or behavior even if you do not intend to.

Japanese don't know about racism because we only learn from textbooks

Race exists and creates issues, but we should see beyond that.

We don't want to think about race, but we have to think about it.

We don't want to talk about race, but we have to talk about it.

Because, we human beings created the concept of 'race'.

In order to move beyond the concept of race and the issues it brings, we have to talk about race.

And Japan is no exception to this!
